Edgell looking for more Southern success

Auckland V8 SuperTourer driver Tim Edgell is hoping for more southern success when the second round of the new season's series is held at Christchurch's Ruapuna Raceway.

Competing in just his fifth V8ST meeting at Ruapuna this weekend, Edgell scored his team's first podium result when he raced his Chesters' backed Holden Commodore at the same track last December.

"I've had a bitter sweet time racing at Ruapuna over the years," said Edgell. "From a big crash a few years ago to podium results in more recent times, this race track has delivered everything. Let's hope we can push for another podium place this time."

It is also the first time the Edgell Performance Racing team has raced at the same track since joining the V8ST ranks late last year for the endurance rounds, and Tim believes the advantage of a previous visit should help his cause.

"For the first time since we started racing this new car we're back at the same circuit, so hopefully we can start this weekend one step ahead because we already have some set-up information for the car," added Edgell.

While the Chesters' Commodore team might be better off with a set-up starting point, Edgell sees the biggest challenge, however, is gaining points in all three races, which this year are all contested on Sunday and not spread over two days.

"With qualifying on Saturday and all three races on Sunday, it's important to push hard but also stay out of trouble to have a good car for all the races. If you get damage, there's not a lot of turnaround time. Luckily at the first round we had no issues in this regard, so let's hope that continues this weekend and we can push forward in the championship chase."

Heading into the second round at Ruapuna, Edgell sits ninth in the 20-car Series of Champions. The BNT V8 SuperTourer series begins with four sprint rounds before three year-ending endurance rounds.

Saturday's program will feature two practice sessions with Qualifying at 3.10pm, followed on Sunday by the three races at 10.40am (12 laps), 1.15pm (16 laps) and 4pm (30 laps).
